My, Oh My! JD Hayworth to Speak at Maricopa County Republican Lincoln Day Luncheon

Posted By Dutch on April 2, 2010

Oh! The scandal of it all! A contested Primary and the Maricopa County Republicans are having JD Hayworth speak at their annual Lincoln Day Luncheon WITHOUT inviting Jim Deakin or Senator McCain! For Shame! For Shame!

This was the newest bone of contention to rile the august body of Republicans at last night’s (Thursday, April 1st) Maricopa County Monthly EGC Meeting. The McCain people were unhappy because of what they claim appears to be an endorsement of JD Hayworth over incumbent Senator, John McCain.

One member of the council raised the issue under new business and quoted the by-laws prohibiting anyone on the council from endorsing anyone in a contested primary on behalf of the council without a 60% approval vote by the council. This council member then attempted to one up the by-laws by calling for the council to raise this threshold to NEVER endorse anyone in a contested primary. The motion was declared out of order which started another fight over the authority of the Chairman to declare a motion out of order. A roll-call vote was taken and passed in the Chairman’s favor (10 – 8, ~5 abstaining).

Challenges from the audience wanted to know who was on the Luncheon committee, and who voted to have JD as the speaker, and please speak louder so we can capture it all on video. As the Chairman asked for the person to please turn off the camera, the council member who raised the original objection again challenged the authority of the chairman in barring cameras from the proceedings.

One audience member declared that never in his 20 years had he seen such a thing as having a speaker from a contested primary at a party function like the Lincoln Day Luncheon.

(I have omitted the names of the individuals involved because there is nothing to be gained by singling out anyone in particular. This issue is bigger than any of the bit players.)

    Much ado about nothing!

Former Congressman, J.D. Hayworth formally announced his candidacy for the Arizona Senate on Monday, February 15, 2010.

On February 19th, Senator John McCain and Senator John Kyl were guest speakers at the Pima County Republican Lincoln Day Dinner. TucsonCitizen.com

On February 20th, J.D. Hayworth spoke before the Legislative District 3 Lincoln Day Luncheon at the Nautical Inn. havasunews.com

Finally, on March 6th, the Santa Cruz County Republicans hosted their annual Lincoln Day Dinner with JD Hayworth as the guest speaker. gilacourier.com

McCain and Hayworth have both spoken at Lincoln Day Dinners and Luncheons without the other, so what is it with the Faux outrage among the McCain supporters in Maricopa County?

Secondly, it is no secret that Senator McCain is not fond of the Maricopa County Republican Chairman, Rob Haney. Just who is Senator McCain kidding? He would not have accepted an invitation, even if it were offered.

Thirdly, Senator McCain has actively dissuaded National Speakers from coming to speak at Arizona Fundraisers because of his dislike of both Rob Haney and Arizona State Party Chairman, Randy Pullen. Is it any wonder, with the Senator actively opposing the County’s ability to recruit high value candidates from speaking that the County turns to someone who won’t be dissuaded from speaking.

The power of incumbency is quite well documented. Senator McCain speaks to the media and many other groups year-round, in election cycles and out of cycles with nary a hint of questioning about the impact such “incumbent” privileges have upon challengers.

There is no justification for the foot-stomping, tantrum throwing, and whining coming out of the McCain campaign. Suck it up boys and girls! It’s going to be a loooooooong election campaign.

Well good luck to those fine Maricopa Republicans..all they’ll get at the luncheon is a lot of hot air blowing out of JD’s mouth! He talks like he is big, true conservative, but anyone who watched his spending when he was in office knows he is not!

    3. Danny says:

Well, I hope they have fun backing a losing candidate. Hayworth is down, what, 14 percentage points, and about 2.5 million dollars from McCain. Seems like McCain has the support of the people, and the money/approval ratings to prove it. So, Maricopa County Republicans, watch out for those icebergs, because I predict y’all going down with the ship.

    4. Julie says:

JD is trying oh so hard to find someone, anyone to call an endorser of his race…poor, poor JD, sorry to break it to you big guy, we do not want you…and while some yet long to hear what comes out of your mouth, upon research, they will find like I did, nothing you can do or say at this point would earn my vote. You are corrupt, you have too many immoral issues, you have a history of earmarks and porkbarrel spending (we need NO more spenders..) We just do not want you and we know why you have no endorsements!

    5. SeanRepublican says:

McCain will win this election hands down, his history of being a man of courage and integrity, a man of standing up for what he believes in, a man of fighting this left wing administration, a man who will never step down from a policy he feels strongly about. We need McCain fighting for us in Washington.

    6. MaskedTruthman says:

McCain stands up (not far in his case) for what he believes in but that’s the problem. He believes in unconstitutional restrictions on our free speech, giving citizenship to illegal aliens, taxing carbon dioxide without justification, regulating dietary supplements and voting against tax cuts. Not very Republican.

    7. 1776 says:

If I knew absolutely nothing about McCain, the tone and ad-homonym content of the JD attack posts nearby would convince me of JD’s superiority over McCain. These attacks sound so much like the left’s attacks against Bush they had to have come out of the same play book. Considering that McCain and his people use the same play book as the Bush-haters and remembering personally McCain’s off-election-year distain for conservatives, what more do I need? On the other hand, I do know a lot about McCain and anyone who says he should be reelected because he’s a good progressive and a not-so-closet liberal, would be speaking at least some truth. Don’t insult me by telling me he’s fighting on my side or that he’s a “conservative”. There is a lot of history readily available on both JD Hayworth and John McCain. Anyone who cares to investigate and compare honestly and who understands the Constitution and what America was about before the Progressive era (as JD does) will ultimately support JD Hayworth.

    9. Lily M. says:

McCain has been reaching, leaning, hanging over the aisle to the point that I wonder why he doesn’t just move on over! And as to his AZ supporters, what are they thinking? Or are they democrats in disguise? How much did he have to pay them for their dishonest “conservative” support? We all know he has tons of money and doesn’t hesitate to use it in ANY way to defeat anyone who disagrees with him. And we all know it’s been years since he’s been anything close to a conservative (The Masked Truthman above sums it up). Neither AZ not the US needs McCain — what we need is for real conservatives like JD to take over in Washington and throughout the country. It’s time for McCain to retire — gracefully or not, and let the real conservatives get on with trying to preserve what freedoms we still possess.

    10. I am a PC in LD23, and II was the first one at that meeting to ask whether the Senator or Jim Deakin would be getting equal time at the event. I had no idea of the fracas that would result. For the record, I support Jim Deakin, not Senator McCain. As you point out, it’s been common this year for the two insiders to be speaking at these events. But Deakin, the lone outsider citizen in this race, has so far been shut out by the party heirarchy.

This speaks to the idea that the GOP in Arizona is conducting business as usual and hears nothing of the Tea Party’s calls for change. What we have in this race are two GOP machine insiders to hedge the bets of the leadership against the Tea Party influence. Change, indeed.

It is my belief that NONE of these candidates should be speaking at an event that is supposed to honor the PCs. Not even the one that I support. Certainly, it is a treat for those who support the particular candidate doing the talking. But it does nothing to promote party unity when you essentially slap the faces of those who support a different candidate than the one receiving all the publicity courtesy of the event organizers. The PCs already deal with candidates and issues to the point of fatigue. Give them a break from it, at least on a day when THEY are supposed to be the guests, for crying out loud.

Finally, For Rob Haney to be making public endorsements AS THE CHAIRMAN, for ANY candidate, is at the very least flirting with the rule in the bylaws that was brought up in this article. His job is to promote the GOP, not one particular candidate, when he speaks as the Chairman.

    11. Beth Straley says:

      I
agree with Michael Bailey. While I was unable to make it to the April 1st meeting, I wrote Mr. Haney, whom I respect and admire, a letter in regards to my frustration with this issue. He attempted to contact me, twice in fact, to discuss my concerns. Unfortunately, we played telephone tag.

As a relatively new PC, I understand that there is much I need to learn. As a conservative activist, I make a little noise when I don’t agree with what I see or hear. While I waited for J.D. to announce his candidacy, I watched, listened and finally made the commitment to campaign for Jim Deakin.

To those who still hold McCain in high regard, I say, WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN? Surely NOT in Arizona or attending any TEA Parties where the True American Patriots are talking. It is ALL ABOUT MONEY. If Jim Deakin had the billfolds supporting him that the other two have, he would be the new darling of our Republican Party. Jim hasn’t sold himself to power and money. That is all the more reason, he deserves respect and high regards from the Republican Party Leaders. My observation is that Jim Deakin is being recognized by the majority of the Constitutional Conservative, “Take Back America”, TEA Party Patriots even though he has become, “the one whose name” they will not mention.
